The Suicide Turn

In competitive swimming the term ‘suicide turn’ refers to the backstroke to breaststroke turn in individual medley races. It is one of the most difficult turns to master in swimming. The decision to execute the turn is a risky one. If you don’t perform it perfectly, you get disqualified and your whole race doesn’t count.

This publication has a strong duality that is a key part of it. The high-contrast photography is to show the high performance and power side of the sport - the machine - above the surface. The rich but minimal copy encapsulates the emotional and vulnerable side of the sport - the human - below the surface.
